To change a flat tire on the side of the road, first, find a safe, flat spot away from traffic. Engage the parking brake, turn on hazard lights, and place wheel wedges behind the tires to prevent rolling. Use a wrench to loosen, but not fully remove, the lug nuts on the flat tire. Then, position a jack under the car’s frame near the flat tire and raise the car until the tire is off the ground. Fully remove the lug nuts, pull off the flat tire, and mount the spare tire onto the lug bolts. Tighten the lug nuts by hand, lower the car slightly so the tire touches the ground, and fully tighten the nuts with the wrench in a star pattern for even distribution. Lower the car completely, remove the jack, and check tire pressure. Store the flat tire and tools before resuming your trip.
